About the SAT & ACT Superscore Calculator

Superscoring is the practice of taking your best section score from each test date and combining them, rather than judging you on a single sitting. This calculator does both versions: the SAT superscore is the best Reading & Writing plus the best Math, and the ACT superscore is the average of the four best section scores, rounded the way ACT rounds a composite.

Frequently asked questions

How is an SAT superscore calculated?

Take your highest Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score from any test date and your highest Math score from any test date, and add them. The two do not have to come from the same sitting, which is the whole point of superscoring.

How is an ACT superscore calculated?

Take your best English, Math, Reading and Science scores across all your test dates, average the four, and round to the nearest whole number — a .5 rounds up. That is the same rounding ACT uses for a composite from a single sitting.

Do colleges actually accept superscores?

Many do, and a growing number say so explicitly on their admissions pages, but it is not universal. Some superscore the SAT but not the ACT, and some require all scores to be sent. Always check the specific college before assuming your superscore is what they will read.

Is it worth retaking the SAT or ACT if my college superscores?

Usually yes, because a retake can only raise a section score for superscoring purposes — a lower score on a section you already did well in simply does not get used. The gain figure here shows how much your existing dates already give you.

Can I mix SAT and ACT scores in a superscore?

No. Superscoring only combines sittings of the same test. Colleges that accept both will look at whichever test you present more favourably, but they will not build a composite from one of each.
